I hope everyone is enjoying their 4th of July celebrations. As the day turns to evening I take a moment to remind those with children with autism to remember the sensory supports that will help make the evening fun for everyone. Ear, eye and breathing or smell protection can be invaluable tools to give your autistic child the opportunity to enjoy the firework displays while honoring their sensory needs. Ear muffs or ear plugs are a staple in my bag of tricks for auditory supports. Sun glasses (yes even at night) or a cloth to cover the eyes help with light sensitivity. And a face mask, cloth, towel or blanket will allow the child to reduce how much smoke and smell they take in.
May everyone have Safe, Happy, and Healthy celebrations.
